The book is set on Earth in the year 7031 ACE (After-Common-Era) and tells the story of a child born in the desert who grows up to become a coastal fisherman. Along the way he befriends a wolf, travels from village to village with a caravan of merchants, summits mountains, visits strange Temples, and eats many a delicious breakfast, until eventually returning to the desert whence he came.
