Finding the Truth Buried Beneath The Lies

sal talks about a Book

With Shelly Stone

*mic-static*

Good aftermornevening, I'm your host Shelly Stone, and right now I'm sitting across from the most debonaire yuppie in the known universe, Sunshine Sal. Sal, it's so great to have you.

The pleasure's all yours.

Before we get in too deep with this book, lets talk about you. You've been on the Red Rainbow scene for quite some time, correct?

I have. 'Bout six years I would say.

So we're talking about before The 27 were even called the 27?

Yes, in a sense. I was present for the order’s inception. Although, in those days it was different. One could say it was spiritually manifest before the title and the concrete applications were known.

Interesting. Were you familiar with O’Reilly's work?

Oh certainly.

I guess he was in the news quite often.

Indeed. Not a man to avoid scandal.

It almost seemed like he welcomed it. Did you ever meet O’Reilly? Or perhaps his associate Mr. Romsfeld?

Personally, no. Management met with O’Reilly many times. I've seen a photograph of Romsfeld, but I can't comment much further on that unfortunately.

I see. So, you've read the book I understand?

Yes. I must admit that it wasn't purely recreational. I was working with an investor—who for our purposes shall remain nameless—and they were interested in mass producing O’Reilly's machine. We were moderately successful at first. We received a letter from his agency, The Technological Institute of Technology.

T.I.T. for short.

Yes. Which is either the best—or the worst—name for an establishment in scientific history.

It stood out.

Especially in cold weather...

*chuckle* SAL!

Forgive me. It's too easy. Anyhow, I ended up meeting with one of the department heads. While I was at that meeting, I was given a digital copy of the autobiography. It had a “shelf-life" as we call it. Which just means it was designed to scramble itself if I attempted to reproduce it or keep it on file after reading.

Why you? Why did they hand it over like that?

A couple of reasons I think. It was a show of approval. O’Reilly's version of a thumbs-up. He was familiar with our work. How? I'm not sure, but he was. It was also the best way for us to understand why he had no intention of producing the The Chamber commercially, but when you're dealing with that level of tech you can't just say no. We're talking about life altering capabilities here, so people were pushing for it. But, as predicted, once I read the book I understood why it couldn't be propagated.

The question that leads me to, is this: If O’Reilly didn't want it to go out into the world, why did he showcase it in Los Angeles?

Hm. Tough to say. For all of his expertise, he could never overcome his own narcissism. I think he wanted to tease people. He wanted everyone to know what The Chamber was capable of, but he never wanted it to fall into the wrong hands. So it was either destroyed or hidden as soon as the show was over.

Based on what you read, which do you believe? Destroyed, or hidden?

*laughs*
Can I say both? Honestly I think you're underestimating him.

Can you give me an example?

I uh...Yea, I guess it couldn't hurt. You see, O’Reilly used every technique he could possibly think of to dilute facts. When you open the book, on the left page he'll depict one of his many personal exploits, and on the right he'll discuss the public work he was doing with BEC at the time. But, the information he gives out in these settings is contradictory, and occasionally the dialogue is swapped. So what happens is, since the left side is some of the worst erotic fiction you've ever read, you try your best to avoid it. You move on to the right side with all the information about the company, but that ends up backfiring. As an example, in one of the chapters he talks about how BEC commissioned Eli Rusk of SpaceHex to shoot The Chamber out into the stars under the guise of an experimental rocket launch. But throughout that same chapter, O’Reilly has a devil's threesome during which he admits that the chamber was actually dropped into a volcano after re-entering Earth's orbit. Worst part is, you don't know if the dialogue was swapped. You don't know which conversation was had in public, and which in private. It's paradoxical, and quite uncomfortable to read, but that's how he does things. If you aren't willing to put up with the snuff, you don't get that piece of the puzzle. In the same vein however, neither version of the story is necessarily true.

Would you say that the inclusion of his exploits are what landed it in the Banned Book section of every bookstore?

One hundred percent. It was a genius move. It wasn't just put in the Banned Book section, but it was also banned from even being in that section. If you go to the store and try to buy it, all you get is a cover sleeve and blank pages.

If it's that bad, why even have hard copies in stores?

Some people will buy it before they look inside.

That's true. Concerning the parts that deal with BEC, do you find them to be accurate?

Eh. Exaggerated, but accurate yes. There was a lot of controversy surrounding BEC at one time. I mean, one of the goals of the company was to integrate human DNA into computers, and eventually give the computer the ability to edit its own....RNA, i guess you would call it—at will. That made people uneasy. As soon as the term genetic manipulation was thrown out there, it didn't matter if it was true or not. The important distinction was that the genetic manipulation was not being done on human subjects. People assume that it was, because that's what they think of when you say genetic manipulation. But when you're talking about the biological components of a device it has nothing to do with people.

BEC still found itself in court though. Several times if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, and though most of those cases were dismissed, the few that stuck were settled out of court. Which only fueled the speculations of course. As someone who was on the periphery of one such case I can say with absolute certainty that BEC was in no way involved in any human rights abuses. The Virginia incident with the undocumented group hidden in a cargo hold was related to an entirely different corporation. The only reason it was pinned on BEC is that it was much easier for the public to accept allegations relating to a bio-engineering facility over a clothing company that's in every mall across the USA.

Right. I'm sorry I brought that up. I forgot your family was involved.

It's okay. The world turns.

Let's try and finish on something light shall we?

Sure, I agree.

Alright, what text did you receive from O’Reilly during the LA showcase event?

*laughs*
It was about, twenty eggplant emoji's. Then Edward sent me an icon for a bullet train. He followed it up with, “That's what he said." To this day I have no idea what any of that means.

Trust me, you're better off.  *laughs*  Thank you Sal for joining us, that was a very informative conversation we just had.

You bet.

As you can imagine I don't always get such straight answers.

I don't doubt it.

Alrighty then, I'm Shelly Stone of The Stationary Stone, and that abrupt conclusion concludes this interview. Sunshine Sal everyone!

*pre-recorded applause*
